Abstract

Introduction: it has been found that adults with more permissive attitudes and social norms toward substance use tend to exhibit a greater intention to engage in risky sexual behaviors. This interaction has been little explored among cisgender adult women.

Objective: to analyze the relationship between attitudes and social norms regarding substance use and the intention to engage in sexual behavior among cisgender adult women in southern Mexico.

Method: a descriptive and correlational cross-sectional study was conducted among 77 female college students at a public institution in Cancún, Quintana Roo. Purposive non-probability sampling was used, reliable questionnaires were administered, and informed consent was obtained.

Results: 55.8% of the participants were between 18 and 27 years old, the majority were both working and studying (52%), 39% used both alcohol and tobacco, and 35.1% reported daily use. 37.7% reported that their friends use substances. Attitude (rs = .767, p < .01) and social norms regarding substance use (rs = .881, p < .01) were significantly associated with the intention to engage in sexual behavior.

Discussion and conclusions: the findings are consistent with previous literature in other contexts. It is necessary to design nursing interventions that incorporate a gender and sociocultural perspective to help modify attitudes and social norms, as well as to prevent substance use and risky sexual behaviors in this population group.
